Alas, I wish the Boy Scouts could still serve as "poster boys for the movement." :-( The decline and co-option of the BSA causes me just as much pain as that of the Episcopal Church...
Yes, I'm aware of Trail Life! But the Boy Scouts have a rich and storied history and image that really isn't replicable, not to mention tremendous resources, both human and in terms of a myriad of camps and "High Adventure Bases." And their "Aims and Methods" are literally brilliant. So it makes me very sad that they've chosen to follow pop culture, instead of their own ideals. It's tragic, in my view.
And I have a great love of Theodore Roosevelt! There have been many wonderful role-models, throughout history. But they're not leading boys on hikes, camp-outs, and canoe trips... *sigh*

There's always Trail Life. Another poster boy was Theodore Roosevelt, whose letters to his sons are still in print. I have a copy, and it's dog-eared.
